21 October 1866, I see no reason to alter the opinion
at which I then arrived.
That at the date of writing the despatch referred to
my calculation was based on providing
accommodation for 600 Chinese prisoners. Since which a long shed has been
inclosed capable of lodging an additional 80 to 100 men,
in providing for a total of 760 Chinese prisoners.
That in the calculations already referred to none of
the extensive corridors and passages
were included, although they might readily be so. By the present system of iron gratings instead of wooden doors, they virtually form part of the space from which air is breathed.
4. That the number of Chinese prisoners confined in Victoria Gaol is
less than three-fifths the number for which accommodation has
been provided, the average of last week being only 451.
